It was built in 1514 and received a plaque carved with "Hua Xing Nan Bang" presented by the Emperor Xianfeng of Qing Dynasty (1616-1912 A. D.) .
Situated between Mt. Minling and Mt. Baima, the monastery belongs to the Gelug Sect (Yellow Sect) of Tibetan Buddhism. Currently, it has one Rinpoche (living Buddha),Drakpa Rinpoche, and 80 Buddhists.
The Hor Monastery is one of the three major Tibetan Buddhist monasteries that belong to the Gelug Sect in Dechen.
A Chinese photographer who goes by a screen name called "Xiaoyao Huanglaoxie" was invited by the Drakpa Rinpoche, the host of the whole monastery, to live under the same roof and eat at the same table with the Buddhists in the monastery, recording their details of life with his camera.
