National standards for information technology vocabulary in Tibetan released
Recently, the “Information Technology vocabulary in Tibetan” was formally published by China Standards Press.
This is the first set of national standards for IT vocabulary written in an ethnic minority language.
Standardization of the terminology of Tibetan IT vocabulary is a fundamental problem for Tibetan language's information construction in China.
In 2005 the China Tibetology Research Center set up a research group focused on “National standards for IT vocabulary in Tibetan”, which was chaired by researcher Tashi Tsering.
In 2010 the National Standardization Management Committee approved that the China Tibetology Research Center to be in charge of forming the compiling group for the standards,
and unite with National Information Technology Standardization Technical Committee to take on and complete the drawing up national standards of “Information Technology vocabulary in Tibetan” and submitting work.
On Dec 31, 2015, the National Standardization Management Committee and the State Administration of Quality Supervision officially jointly approved and released National Standards of “Information Technology vocabulary in Tibetan” which is scheduled for implementation on Jan 1, 2017.
The vocabulary is formulated the Tibetan terminology and definitions, by the contrast among Chinese, Tibetan and English, related to various areas of information technology. It contains more than 6,000 entries and is China’s first comprehensive set of Tibetan standards related to information technology vocabulary.
