As a typical representative of the fauna of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Tibetan antelope belongs to the first class protected animal in China.

In order to protect them and other special rare animals on the plateau, China established the Altun Mountains National Natural Reserve in 1983, and in 1992, the Changtang Natural Reserve was established; in 1995, Hoh Xil became a provincial natural reserve of Qinghai province, and rose to a national nature reserve in 1997. And in 2000, the Source of Three Rivers Natural Reserve was established as well.

The Changtang National Natural Reserve with an area of 298,000 square kilometers, is currently the highest altitude and the largest natural reserve in China.

Sitting at an average altitude of more than 5,000 meters, many herdsmen's home in Rongma Township are very close to the littering and migratory place of Tibetan antelope, not conducive to wildlife protection. At the same time, herdsmen there suffer great difficulties in employment, medical treatment, children's schooling and so on.

As a result, the Tibet Autonomous Region has launched its first high altitude ecological relocation project here.
