UN chief appoints new force commander of UN mission in Mali
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Lt. Gen. Dennis Gyllensporre of Sweden as the force commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, said his press office on Thursday.
Gyllensporre succeeds Maj. Gen. Jean-Paul Deconinck of Belgium, who will complete his assignment on Oct. 2.
As the chief of the Swedish Defense Staff and head of Special Forces since November 2014, Gyllensporre has had a long and distinguished career, said Guterres' press office.
He also has extensive international operational experience in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sudan and Afghanistan, the office said.
Born in 1964, Gyllensporre is married and has three children.
The UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, known as MINUSMA, was established in April 2013 to help stabilize the situation in Mali, which is plagued by a civil war and the rise of Islamist militants.
