China’s highest-altitude cross-country race held in Ngari
The 2018 First Ngari Round-Mt. Kailash Trail Running and Round-Lake Manasarovar Cycling Challenge kicked off on September 9 in Huo’er Township, Burang County in Ngari Prefecture, Tibet.
The average altitude for the Round-Lake Manasarovar Cycling Challenge is 4,600 meters above sea level, which is currently the highest mountain biking and cross-country cycling race in China. The race is taking place at Lake Manasarovar, one of the three holiest lakes in Tibet.
Ngari Prefecture is located on the southwestern border of China and the western part of Tibet. It is where the Himalayan and Gangdise mountain ranges meet, and it is also the source of the Yarlung Tsangpo River, the Indus River, and the Ganges River. Because of this, it is often referred to as “the ancestor of ten thousand mountains” and “the source of a hundred rivers”.
