Kiang on the Changtang grassland
Kiang is a hoof species unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and mainly inhabits the extremely cold grassy knolls and pasture areas of the plateau. The kiang is a first class national protected species in China. In recent years, the number of the kiang in Tibet has grown thanks to the region’s effort in improving its ecological protection and controlling poaching and illegal hunting.
In the summer, the kiang could be seen everywhere on the Changtang grassland. The Changtang National Nature Conservation District is part of both Nagqu and Ngari prefectures in Tibet, and has an average altitude of over 5000 meters, making it China’s highest altitude and largest nature reserve.
