Tibet’s children with congenital heart disease treated free of charge

For Jigme Dorje, the year 2022 is full of hope.

In the first month of the New Year, his child was discharged from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University.

Jigme Dorje's child was born with congenital heart disease. Luckily, he recovered after about a month of treatment. Besides him, there are 42 children with congenital heart disease having recovered and been discharged from the hospital in Nanjing thanks to the medical aid to Tibet from Jiangsu province.

All things started with the "Heart Protect Project". Namely, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University launched a health program for poverty alleviation to help children with congenital heart disease free of charge,

Since 2014, staff of the project have visited many impoverished and remote areas and vast rural areas to provide free treatment for children with congenital heart disease. In total, they have screened more than 60,000 people, conducted over 400 free clinics and popular science lectures, provided free training to more than 10,000 medical staff in the county and township grassroots, raised more than 8 million yuan charity funds and helped nearly 600 children with congenital heart disease.
