Tibetan medicine is able to produce a more than 90 percent healing effect on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, according to a Tibetan doctor.

Cardiovascular diseases seriously threaten people's health. In China, about 300,000 people die of cardiovascular diseases with over 60-year-olds accounting for 10 percent every year, at an annual increasing rate of 5 percent, statistics showed.

Tibet Tibetan Medical Hospital has a great difference from common comprehensive hospitals in the disease treatment, said Dawa Tsering, a chief doctor of the cardiovascular disease department of the hospital, a regional top hospital specializing in Tibetan therapy.

Pharmacological researchers from Peking University, a top university in China, found Tibet's herbs belonged to the same variety as inland ones but they had different active constituents, according to Dawa.

In Tibetan medicine, medicinal plants of the same kind will have different drug properties and healing effects if they grow in different places, seasons or at different attitudes.

Even, one plant's leaves, sprouts, flowers, fruits, seeds, barks and roots derive different treatment effects and Tibetan medical practitioners must hammer away at them.

The Tibetan treatment of high blood pressure, a common cardiovascular disease, usually takes three months, and as a worldwide difficult problem, it can only be brought under control but not be cured, said Dawa.

Tibetan medicine will first be used to maintain the blood pressure and then control some complications, added Dawa.
