“We can get an annual income of more than 30,000 yuan (about 4,600 US dollars) from our apple trees, and this is the only source of income for our family.” 24-year-old Basang Lhamo said.

Basang Lhamo is the mother of two children and is an expert in agricultural planting from Tongmai Village in Mirui Township, Bayi District, Nyingchi City, Tibet.

Basang Lhamo was busy with selecting and packing apples while telling reporters about apple sales: “Now, the apples have many loyal customers, and every year, the demand exceeds supply.”

Tongmai Village is located on the northern bank of the Yarlung Tsangpo River in the southern part of Bayi District. According to Zou Jimin, the first secretary of the Party branch of Tongmai Village, there are 31 households and 147 people in the village. “In 2019, the annual per capita disposable income of Tongmai Village exceeded 30,000 yuan.”

The apples are sliced and dried.

“Our village is an industrial village with strong competition. Apples are the main agricultural specialty in the village. The annual income of the apple industry is 600,000 yuan.” According to Zou Jimin, Tongmai Village’s industries include vegetable bases, apple planting bases, and tourism reception service centers.

It is reported that in recent years, in order to strengthen the collective economy of the village, Tongmai Village has been actively organizing its residents to learn apple planting techniques to promote high-quality development of the industry.
