As the overlord of the plateau, the wild yak usually lives in the alpine meadows at altitudes from 3,000 to 6,000 meters. It is a typical alpine animal and is extremely hardy.

Living in Qinghai, Tibet, and northwestern Gansu, wild yaks belong to the national first-class protected animals.
