Since 2016, Ngari has lifted 23,159 impoverished people, nearly 19% of the prefecture’s total population, out of poverty and slashed the poverty rate from 28.3% to zero.
Ngari, nicknamed the top of the world’s roof with an average elevation of 4,500 meters, is known for its breathtaking plateau scenery. However, its harsh physical environment makes poverty alleviation extremely difficult. Through developing local industries especially tourism, building relocation sites for impoverished people, and upgrading infrastructures such as rural power grids, highways and drinking water projects, local residents are casting off poverty and are now leading a better life.
