Traditional Chinese shadow puppetry in NW China

The Chinese shadow puppetry, popular especially in Huanxian County, northwest China’s Gansu province, is a kind of traditional folk art using light to cast shadows of figures made of animal skins or cardboard.

The singing of the shadow puppetry performance is unique and beautiful. It is featured that there is one leading singer and several accompanier. The performance is usually carried out in cave dwellings on the loess plateau.

In May 2006, the shadow puppetry was included in the Representative List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
