On March 9, Gundeling Monastery, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the urban area of Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, completed Mandala painting with sand. It is reported that as a tradition of Gundeling Monastery, every year during the Tibetan New Year (also known as Losar), the monastery will draw and enshrine one of the three major Vajra Mandalas, the “Yamataka Vajra Mandala”, according to the usual practice. Mandala originates from Indian Buddhist Tantra, and is one of the objects worshipped in Tibetan Buddhism Tantra practice. Before drawing the Mandala, the monks of Gundeling Monastery recited the scriptures according to the rituals and measured the position of the Mandala. After the outline is drawn, they start from the center with squares and circles, and gradually spread to the periphery. The colored sand is poured into the conical metal tube, and monks accurately and carefully drip the colored sand onto the pedestal through the vibration caused by the sliding of the thin metal strip up and down the conical metal tube. Because the sand is extremely fine, monks need to wear masks to prevent their breathing from affecting the formation of sand.
