Recently, the first ever performance of the experimental street dance show “Fusion & Roots” opened in Lhasa. It consisted of 9 sessions, all of which were marvelous and meaningful.
As the white-haired elder passed the instrument to the kid who loved street dancing, they all danced together to the music of strings. This was performed by Dhondup Tsering and guest performer Pasang.
“The elder symbolized tradition and the kid symbolized new life. The elder taught the kid how to play the strings and the kid fused together street dance and the strings. I understood the meaning of this show. It was magnificent.” One audience said with tears of joy.
Dhondup Tsering and Pasang have been dancing for 4 years. Dhondup Tsering is now a senior college student, and Pasang works in journalism. Speaking of their cooperation, Pasang thought it was very meaningful, and as he knew how to play the strings, he said yes to Dhondup Tsering’s invitation immediately.
Dhondup Tsering told reporters that his family had not supported him for street dance at first. However, he carried on with it because he loved dancing. The meaning of this show was how to integrate street dance culture to traditional ethic culture and encourage people to accept street dance. “To make my family understand street dance, I held many events with my friends and invited them to watch. Gradually, my family understands street dance and me, and they have accepted it now.” Dhondup Tsering said.
“We hope that more people can appreciate the artistic power of the street dance culture, and more Tibetan street dancers can understand how traditional culture helps them improve their dance performance. We hope we can all gain a further understanding of both tradition and street dance culture. Next, we will hold seminars based on the opinions of experts here, and produce more good shows in future.” The event organizer Champa Wangden said.
