The Caina National Modern Agricultural Demonstration Zone (hereinafter referred to as “Caina Zone”) is in Caina Village, Caina Township, Quxu County, Lhasa City, Xizang Autonomous Region. It is a national 4A tourist attraction, a national modern agriculture demonstration zone, and a national demonstration park for the integrated development of rural industries. Based on idea of “ecological priority, green development, technological empowerment, and integration of agriculture and tourism”, the zone creates a model for modern agriculture on the plateau while boosting rural revitalization and high-quality regional economic development.
The mascot of the Caina Zone is called “Yaya.” Its representation features an embryo adorned in traditional Tibetan attire, holding a hada scarf in both hands. The name “Caina” was previously referred to as “Caiina,” which translates to “source of vegetables” in Tibetan. According to legend, 1,300 years ago, when Princess Wencheng entered Xizang, she was pleased with the climatic conditions in Caina and decided to sow grains, flowering plant seeds, and medicinal herbs that she had brought from the Tang Dynasty. Due to the harsh environmental conditions prevalent in Xizang at that time, these plants were only successfully cultivated in Caina, thus giving rise to its name.
The seeds of national unity sowed by Princess Wencheng still blossom in vibrant hues today. The total investment for the Caina Zone amounts to RMB 600 million, which includes a contribution of RMB 150 million from Jiangsu Province aimed at supporting Xizang. The Anthurium Andraeanum Linden Flower Base serves as an exemplary model of industrial assistance to Xizang, facilitated by Taizhou, Jiangsu Province. This base was collaboratively established by Suzhong Horticultural Company, a state-owned enterprise based in Taizhou, and the Caina Zone. Covering a total area of 16 mu, the greenhouse spans over 10,000 square meters and can produce 100,000 pots of fresh flowers annually.
The development of agriculture on the plateau demonstrates the national unity that has been upheld for over 1,300 years. By continuously “bringing in” and “going out”, the Caina Zone has introduced advanced technologies from other provinces and cities. Futhermore, it is actively engaged in the exploration of crop planting and cultivation on the plateau. It has established collaborations with various scientific research institutions to advance agricultural practices on the plateau and achieve breakthroughs.
Currently, by establishing a development model that integrates “agriculture, tourism, and educational tours,” the Caina Zone fully leverages its existing regional advantages to create a distinctive agricultural intellectual property representative of the plateau. It actively promotes tourism and educational tour activities, establishing a pioneering model in Xizang where education and social production are closely intertwined and mutually empowering.
