Recently, the first offspring of the 2021 yak economic hybrid in Kongjo County, Chamdo City, Tibet Autonomous Region, was successfully born in Nianglie Village, Lhagyel Township, Kongjo County.

It is understood that the calf is the offspring of an Angus and a local pien niu (offspring of a bull and a female yak), who are the male parent and the female parent respectively. Currently, the calf is in good health. “Kongjo County Animal Husbandry Station has started to go into every household to publicize the yak economic hybrid policy since March 2021. The breeding work began in mid-June last year. With joint efforts of pastors and technicians, more than 700 tasks have been assigned, and 632 of them have been completed. In the next step, we will actively guide the masses to participate in the yak economic hybrid project, so as to drive the local people to increase their income.” Said Tsering Butri, a pastor with the Kongjo County Animal Husbandry Station.

Solam Sambu, a villager in Nianglie Village, Lhagyel Township, Kongjo County, looked at the newborn calf and said happily, “with the help of the county staff, our family’s yaks were also bred. During this process, we feed our yaks with more supplements, and the first calf (named Yajing snow cattle) born yesterday is different from the previous calves in terms of weight and length, bigger and longer.”

According to relevant staff of Kongjo County Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Bureau, they will strengthen the tracking management of female Pien niu that have participated in breeding to ensure that the birth rate of Yajiang snow cattle will steadily increase. At the same time, efforts will be spent to promote farmers and herdsmen’s understanding of yak economic hybrid policy and the efficiency of subsidized funds.
