The horse racing culture, which is closely integrated with the lives of Tibetan people, has endured in Tibet for a long time. However, the development of horse racing into a modern equestrian sport is only a matter in recent decades. In 1986, under the initiative of the 10th Panchen Rinpoche, the Tibet Sports Commission selected 40 young people aged fifteen or sixteen from all over Tibet to form the original Tibetan equestrian team.
Learning to ride horse from the age of 8, joining the team at 9, and receiving training for 26 years, Penba Tsering has witnessed Tibet’s development of equestrian sports. When the equestrian team was first established, the team members used motorcycle helmets as helmets, were kicked and bitten by horses, lived in tents, and worked for other equestrian clubs to be allowed to use the training ground... Due to the high spending, the equestrian team once had a difficult time. Slowly, the team began to perform well in major events and got attention. So far, the team has won 36 gold medals, 48 silver medals and 56 bronze medals in various events.
