Walking Through Nagqu: From Baingoin to Tsonyi

2025-09-15 10:43:00China Tibet Online

Baingoin, located on the northern plateau of Xizang, means “Auspicious Protector” in Tibetan. It lies within the lake basin region of the southern Changtang Plateau. The Pubao River Valley serves as a natural divide within the county, separating it into northern and southern regions. The southern area, characterized by abundant water resources and lush vegetation, is particularly conducive to yak husbandry. In contrast, the northern region predominantly features cold, semi-desert grasslands that provide an ideal natural pasture for Tibetan sheep grazing.

The journey from Baingoin to Tsonyi evokes a sensation akin to viewing the world in slow motion. As one departs from the bustling town, the expansive and open grasslands appear to cleanse both the gaze and the spirit. Tsonyi, recognized as “the highest county in China,” boasts an average altitude exceeding 5,000 meters. Located within the lake basin region of theChangtang Plateau, it is characterized by gentle mountains, vast prairies, and extensive areas of cold and semi-desert grassland.
