Recently, a press conference was held in Damxung County, Lhasa City, the Xizang Autonomous Region. It was announced that the world’s first cloned yak, “Namco 1#,” had completed its first month of life with excellent health and all physiological indices meeting outstanding standards. This achievement marks a significant historical breakthrough for China in the field of livestock cloning technology at high altitudes and injects substantial scientific and technological momentum into the revitalization of the yak breeding industry in Xizang.
This cloned yak weighed 33.5 jin (approximately 16.75 kilograms) at birth. After receiving excellent care from the scientific research team for 30 days, its weight has increased to 63.9 jin (about 31.95 kilograms), averaging a weight gain of about 1 jin (0.5 kilograms) per day. Currently, its growth performance and overall mental state are promising, which not only validates the reliability of cloning technology in plateau environments but also highlights the genetic superiority of high-quality genetic resources.
