The First Captive-Bred Spotted Seal on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau Celebrated Its First Month of Life

On March 14, the first captive-bred spotted seal on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau celebrated its first month of life. It will soon be open to public viewing.

As a national first-class protected animal and the only pinniped species that breeds in China’s territorial waters, the spotted seal is hailed as the “marine panda.”

Located in the Huangzhong District of Xining, Qinghai, the aquarium is on the plateau and has unique natural conditions. The successful breeding of this species in such an environment has addressed a significant gap in cultivating marine life on the plateau.
