"Recently, staff members discovered a black stork breeding nest in a wetland park. At present, three nestling hatched black storks have grown up and spread their wings. This is the first time black storks have been found to hatch in Qinghai Province," said Guo Faxin, a senior engineer with the Nanmenxia National Wetland Park in northwest China's Qinghai.

Staff of the Nanmenxia National Wetland Park in Huzhu County, Qinghai have discovered black storks in the Nanmenxia Wetland and the surrounding forest areas many times. It is estimated that there are more than 10 black storks, however it is the first time black stork nests and hatched nestlings have been discovered in the wild in Qinghai.

Black storks are graceful, brilliantly colored, agile, and alert large wading birds. They are national first-class protected animals and a world endangered rare bird species. They have been listed as an endangered species by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.

"Black storks are one of the important species that reflect the ecological environment. The discovery of black stork nests and nestlings further confirms that the ecological environment in the Nanmenxia Wetland in Huzhu County continues to improve. It has become an important habitat for black storks, and it is especially urgent to protect well the wetland resources," Guo Faxin said.
