Fresh vegetables enriching dinners on Tibetan New Year's Eve

In the past, green vegetables were more expensive than meat especially in winter, and fruits such as watermelon were very rare in the markets. Nowadays, Tibet has its own brand vegetables and some of them have been exported to Nepal. Fresh green vegetables enrich the Tibetan's dinners and diversify their diet structures.

Wu Yingjie, a cadre in Tibet reminded the past days and said:"I'm so proud about the development of Tibet. Our standard of living is improving a lot. In the past, green vegetables had been viewed as luxury food. Potatoes, carrots and Chinese cabbages were the only vegetables available for Tibetans. "

Since the skills of planting vegetables in greenhouse brought successfully, there were great changes in Tibet. Tashi, chef in a restaurant said:"I enjoy my job by cooking dishes for people with the local fresh vegetables. Sauteed pea pods, fried lettuce, fried celery with fresh lily and steamed mandarin fish ect are very popular among Tibetan customers."

"In 2008, the output of 110 kinds of green vegetables has reached 550,000 tons," an official from TAR agriculture department said. The largest vegetable base in Tibet is located in Bainang County. The famers have benefited from greenhouses by planting vegetables.

Tibetans start caring about not only the tastes, colors but also the nutritions of food. The life of Tibetans is improving day by day.
