The monastery was first built in 1651 and was a famous royal temple directly under the jurisdiction of Lifan Yuan (the highest authority of the Qing Dynasty government over the Mongolian, Hui and Tibetan minorities). It was also the residence of the 5th Dalai Lama and the 6th Panchen Lama.
