On September 9, 1965, the Tibet Autonomous Region was established, the capital of which was Lhasa. Ngapo Ngawang Jigme was the first chairman of the autonomous region government. All ethnic groups in Lhasa held a grand assembly and parade to celebrate the establishment of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
