On December 25, 1954, the Kham-Tibet Highway (from Jinjiguan at the junction of previous Xikang Province and Sichuan Province to Lhasa) and the Qinghai-Tibet Highway (Xining to Lhasa) were opened to traffic at the same time, with lengths of 2,271 km and 1,937 km respectively. This marked the end of Tibet’s history without modern highways.
