Elderly residents feel at home in shared facility

2020-08-03 09:47:00China Daily

More than 90 elderly Tibetans who lack proper homecare have adopted a nursing home in Tibet's Nakartse county as their home because of the center's attentive care and range of services.

Losang Chodron, the head of the center, said the elderly people receive housing, food, hygiene, medical care and suitable sports activities and amusements.

At the center, residents needn't worry about the cost of getting sick, as all their medical expenses are covered by insurance and government subsidies, she said.

Apart from a living allowance, elders get a monthly subsidy of 300 yuan ($50). Perhaps even more important, they can participate in many activities in daily life — playing cards, dancing, singing, billiards, drinking tea or using the fitness equipment.

Resident Norbu Dorje, 66, said he considered the center his real home.

"More than 10 staff members take care of us. We have nice meals here. Our dorm is clean and comfortable, and the dorm is equipped with refrigerator, shower and central heating," he said. "I appreciate the support of the government, and we really have a comfortable life here in the center. I never dreamed I'd have such a wonderful life here in this nursing center, and I am not worried for my twilight years at all."
