Sky Railway and the Eleventh Group tells stories of waiting and dedication
On August 8, documentary Sky Railway and the Eleventh Group was broadcast exclusively on Iqiyi, one of the most popular video-streaming platforms in China.
Sky Railway and the Eleventh Group is a documentary about the life of train workers on the Z21/22 trains. It records through the lens the five days of the last journey the Z21/22 train takes from Beijing to Lhasa route.
It also follows Wang Baoshan, Eleventh Group train manager, and his wife Li Chao, manager of the train dining car, who have traveled back and forth between Beijing and Lhasa on the train for ten years.
The documentary tells stories of the train staff on the Beijing-Lhasa Train who have persisted in serving the "Sky Railway" for ten years.
The Beijing-Lhasa Train was opened on July 1, 2006, traveling a distance of 3,757 kilometers in 43 hours from Beijing, passing through eight provinces including Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, and Tibet. After the train arrives in Lhasa, it stops for one night, then returns to Beijing the next day. When the train travels over Tanggula Mountain, it reaches the route's highest altitude of 5,072 meters. This is the closest any train in the world comes to touching the sky.
On this train, we are passing passengers, while they are the workers who have been on the job for ten years.
