Tibet boosts sporting development

“Tibet will give priority to and focus on developing track and field endurance events such as long-distance running, marathons, race walking, and advantageous events such as cross-country skiing, alpine skiing and rock climbing, competitive equestrian,” said Nyima Tsering, the director of the Tibet Autonomous Region Sports Bureau, at a region-wide sports work conference held in Lhasa on April 17.

It is reported that in 2018, athletes from Tibet Autonomous Region won 46 gold medals, 37 silver medals, and 52 bronze medals in various domestic and international competitions. Of these, at the Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, Dobgye achieved a breakthrough with an Asian Games medal for China in the men’s marathon event. At the 2019 Xuzhou International Marathon, Dobgye won the championship and also qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the IAAF World Championships Doha 2019 in Qatar.

Nyima Tsering said that Tibet is striving to achieve new breakthroughs for China in snow sports. In recent years, Tibet has actively selected excellent athletes to receive high-level training in developed athletic countries for cross-country skiing, track and field long-distance running, competitive equestrian, rock climbing, and other events, training star athletes and cultivating advantageous events.
