It is reported that Sanjiangyuan National Park will be formally established before the end of this year, becoming China’s first national park.

The Sanjiangyuan (Three Rivers’ Source) area is located in the south of Qinghai Province and in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the birthplace of the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Lancang River, and  is an important ecological security barrier for China. The area is rich in water and grass, and famous for biodiversity. At the end of the last century, due to the impact of climate change and human activities, the service function of the Sanjiangyuan ecosystem declined, with fewer lakes, shrinking glaciers, and degradation of grasslands. The biodiversity of the area was seriously threatened.

Since the beginning of the new century, the ecological environment in the Sanjiangyuan region has improved significantly thanks to continuous preservation and the establishment of the Sanjiangyuan National Natural Reserve and the  Sanjiangyuan National Ecological Preservation Experimental Zone with a total area of 395,000 square kilometers.
