On the southern slope of Baji District, along Niyang River in Nyingchi of Tibet, grows a family of 1000 giant cypress trees of 10 hectares. In this family of giant cypress trees, the youngest trees are just several years old, while the older ones are thousands of years old. What’s more, the largest one is known as the “Biggest Cypress Tree of China,” with its height of 57 meters and a diameter of 5.8 meters; even a dozen adults cannot wrap their arms around it. This giant cypress tree is 3233 years old, and has won a “Guinness World Record” certificate as issued by the Guinness Records office based in Shanghai’s Great World.

The giant cypress is also known as Yarlung Tsangpo Cypress and is unique to Tibet. The trees are grown along the Yarlung Tsangpo river from Lang County to Mailing County in Yarlung Tsangpo Valley, as well as downriver area in Niyang River with altitude from 3000 to 3400 meters. The giant cypress tree is an endangered, level-one nationally-protected species, and one of the five types of rare cypress trees in the world.
