Chinese President urges more UN focus on developing countries

Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed support for UN Secretary-General designate Antonio Guterres.

During a meeting in Beijing, Xi Jinping suggested the UN pay more attention to the interests of developing countries in international affairs.

The Chinese leader said the UN is expected to play a bigger role in world affairs in terms of maintaining peace, stability and rallying efforts to deal with climate change.

Xi Jinping also promised greater efforts to be made to enhance cooperation between China and UN.

Guterres thanked Xi Jinping for his support and hailed China's efforts to promote UN undertakings and help developing countries.

Guterres is on a two-day visit to China. He has also met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
