On June 4 (April 1 in Tibetan calendar), Tibetan people welcome their annual Sagya Dawa Festival which will last for a whole month. As the previous years, the devout prayers set off the Potala Palace to take ritual walks at 02:00, the first day of April 1 in Tibetan calendar. Then they got together at the Jokhang Temple holding Prayer wheels, worshiping Buddha and chanting scriptures.
Tashi Phuntsok from Tohlung Dechen recalled the Sagya Dawa Festival in old Lhasa before 1959 Democratic Reform, he said:"At that time, there were more beggers than prayers on the way to take ritual walks on Sagya Dawa Festival. Now we are living happily thanks to the government housing projects in rural and pastoral areas."
Gangbung Tashi and Tshernam Drolma from Chamdo said:"With our living standards improving, now we have spared money to celebrate this festival by air."
At the same time, the policemen have been allocated along Lingkor road to maintain traffic order and security, for so many prayers getting together in Lhasa during the Sagya Dawa Festival. Up to now, the traffic Lhasa is going orderly.
Besides, the armed soldiers and policemen on duty also helped the old prayers cross the roads. Guojur, a 74 years old Tibetan, was moved and said sincerely:" I'm from the pastoral area. Before coming to Lhasa, I was worried about my leg problems. Thanks to the kind policeman, he carried me on his back to cross the roads. I would like to pray for them, Buddha will bless those kind people."
